The £2 million project updated a 3,500m2 promenade connecting the town’s Eastern and Western docks.
The Lifting Wave, Resting Wave, Lighting Wave project was the winning design by Tonkin Liu Architects in a competition organised by the Landscape Institute & Winner of the 2011 RIBA South East Region National Architecture Award
Our works consisted of the removal and refurbishment of the existing sea front and construction of the new sea wall, foundations, hard landscaping, drainage, beach re-modelling and surfacing.
The Resting Wave, which includes a series of weathered oak benches designed to resemble driftwood, features a sculptured retaining wall running the entire length of the esplanade. The Lifting Wave part of the project, a repeated form of sculptural ramps and staircases made of pre-cast white concrete rise and fall to connect the esplanade to the shingle beach.
